About the Artist
Eston Tan
Born in Penang, Malaysia, Eston Tan is a contemporary artist who has spent over 25 years exploring the boundaries between impressionism and contemporary oil painting. His work is distinguished by its bold use of impasto technique, where thick layers of oil paint create richly textured surfaces that capture light and movement.
After studying fine arts in Kuala Lumpur, Eston relocated to Taipei, Taiwan, where he has lived and worked for over two decades. This dual cultural heritage — the tropical warmth of Southeast Asia and the misty mountain landscapes of Taiwan — forms the foundation of his artistic vision.
His paintings span landscapes, figurative work, still life, and urban scenes, always united by a sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and the emotional resonance of place. Working primarily with oil on canvas and linen, Eston builds his compositions through layers of color applied with both brush and palette knife.
Eston's work has been exhibited internationally, including shows in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Austria, and the United States. His paintings are held in private collections across Asia and Europe.
Artistic Philosophy
I believe painting is an act of translation — translating the experience of seeing, of being present in a landscape or a moment, into something physical and lasting. The texture of oil paint allows me to embed not just what I see, but how it feels: the weight of humid air, the shimmer of wet pavement, the quiet of a mountain morning.
My work is often described as semi-impressionistic, but I think of it more as a dialogue between observation and memory. I rarely paint from photographs. Instead, I return to places again and again, building a reservoir of sensory experience that eventually finds its way onto the canvas.
